I personally recommend staying at one of two charming Bed and Breakfast hotels, which are in the heart of Palo Alto, walking distance to much of the small city.

COWPER INN

Charming, dark wooded two homes connected by covered bridge. Craftsman Victorian and Victorian Farmhouse styles, over 100 years old. Located in what is referred to as Professor Ville -- very near the Stanford University Campus.

VICTORIAN ON LYTTON

This is a classic two story, restored wooden Victorian home with 10 rooms. All have private bath, no-smoking and computer modem hook-up. Also located on the edge of downtown, near excellent restaurants. Off street parking in the rear.
Rooms are $129 per night, with continental breakfast.

I do not know this hotel, but it has only 20 rooms and is quite close to HP, where UTC meetings will take place. Not walking distance to downtown Palo Alto.
