L2/99-347 From: Asmus Freytag [asmusf@ix.netcom.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 1999 9:29 PM To: officers@unicode.org Cc: arnold.winkler@unisys.com; mike_ksar@hp.com Subject: AFII and ISO10036 Ken wrote to unicore: "... all in good time". re the suggestion to ask for the withdrawal of 10036. I'm sending this to officers, arnold and mike in the hopes of catching one of you that is at the meeting. I will not be able to make these points that I had planned to make during a discussion at the meeting: SC34 is going to have a meeting in early Dec. At this meeting they will look a the last liaison report from AFII (after that AFII will no longer be a liaison and thus not even be informed of when meetings are held). This report asks for the withdrawal of ISO 10036. This makes the *current* UTC/L2 meeting the best venue to issue a supporting statement from L2 (and or Unicode, the latter up to UTC discretion, since it might undercut our volunteering to act as registrar - L2 is not affected by that concern.) I can forward such statement to SC34 on behalf of L2 or Unicode if requested. I do agree with Ken, that going this way does not imply that we should not continue our offer to act as registrar as long as the standard exists, but there is no reason to wait any longer with encouraging SC34 to initiate the long process of withdrawing the standard, especially since we are only on the hook for an initial input - it's their standard and we would not be required to do that work for them. That's all. A./
