These have now, I believe, been added to the Shift-JIS encoding, but are not part of Unicode. This means that round-trip compatibility has been lost between Unicode and Shift-JIS, if indeed it ever fully existed. I am NOT arguing for the addition of the NTT DoCoMo pictographs to Unicode, but I would be interested to know what people think about symbols. There are a whole world of symbols out there, thousands of which are available in what used to be called 'pi fonts': tourist information like crossed knives and forks, tiny locomotives, beds, map symbols, logos, and so on. Some are perhaps common enough to be added to Unicode - but obviously not to the BMP. The obvious solution is to put the NTT DoCoMo pictographs in the Private Use Area. However, these things are not really private to a particular organisation, but are an open standard; and the Private Use Area should ideally be reserved for characters used only inside a particular organisation or application. These characters are designed (I think) partly for use in e-mail and SMS messages, and so will be communicated between different platforms. This communication will no doubt use the Shift-JIS encoding, but platforms like EPOC, which I work on, will then have to translate them into Unicode. My personal preference would be to put them in Unicode, in some plane dedicated to these sorts of symbol repertoires. The two clincher reasons are (i) maintain round-trip Shift-JIS conversion capability; and (ii) pre-empt ideas for 'extended Unicode' or 'Japanese standard Private Use Area' that would subvert Unicode principles. Here is an early, and probably obsolete, list of the characters in question. Some have Unicode equivalents; many do not. I would love to have glyphs for these, but they are up to individual licensees or users of this standard. (What could 'worthwhile when you have a chance' look like? Or 'not very exciting'?).
