This document responds to document SC 2/WG 2 N2260 received from the APL Working Group after its Meeting 22 in Berlin held in July, 2000.  Document N2260 describes inconsistencies between the names of 5 APL characters (U+234A, U+234E, U+2351, U+2355, U+2361) in ISO/IEC 10646-1: 2000 due to the fact that APL had two conflicting naming conventions (Bosworth convention and London convention).  SC 2/WG 2 requests feedback on this response from SC 22/WG 3.

SC 2/WG 2 principles prevent changing a 10646 character name once the character has been approved in the standard.  The reason is that the character names are normative and that existing applications depend on the character names.  Therefore to respond to the concerns of the APL Working Group, SC 2/WG 2 proposes to rewrite the notes on the 5 APL characters currently in informative Annex P, “Additional information on characters”.  In addition, SC 2/WG 2 proposes to add the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485: 1995 and ISO/IEC 13751: 2000, to informative Annex M that contains the character sources.

The proposed revised text for the 5 APL characters in Annex P is as follows.

224A  APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL DOWN TACK UNDERBAR

This character name is inconsistent with the UP TACK UNDERBAR name used in the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485 and ISO/IEC 13751.

234E  APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL DOWN TACK JOT

This character name is inconsistent with the UP TACK JOT name used in the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485 and ISO/IEC 13751.

2351  APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL UP TACK OVERBAR

This character name is inconsistent with the DOWN TACK OVERBAR name used in the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485 and ISO/IEC 13751.

2355  APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL UP TACK JOT

This character name is inconsistent with the DOWN TACK JOT name used in the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485 and ISO/IEC 13751.

2361  APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL UP TACK DIAERESIS

This character name is inconsistent with the DOWN TACK DIAERESIS name used in the APL standards, ISO/IEC 8485 and ISO/IEC 13751.
