L2/01-118 From: Kenneth Whistler [kenw@sybase.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2001 5:39 PM Subject: Joining group "WAW" Mark, et al., I think this is likely an error that should be fixed, but at this point should be brought up for discussion in the UTC and decision for Unicode 3.2, rather than being fixed for Unicode 3.1. When I went probing, this veered off into the separate problem of the meaning of the "Group" for Arabic, with all the diacritic variants, in Tables 8-6 and 8-7, versus the "Character" for Syriac, in tables 8-11 and 8-12. The meaning of "joining group" needs to be further clarified, before we just make an ad hoc fix for one entry in the table, I believe. Lisa and Arnold, can you add this for the agenda for the next UTC meeting? --Ken ----- Begin Included Message ----- > From unicode@unicode.org Tue Mar 13 04:02 PST 2001 > To: "Unicode List" Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 03:32:14 -0800 (GMT-0800) Subject: Joining group "WAW" I was peeping in file when I noticed this: # Unicode; Schematic Name; Joining Type; Joining Group ... # Arabic characters ... 0624; HAMZA ON WAW; R; WAW ... # Syriac characters ... 0718; WAW; R; WAW ... Isn't it sad that two different Joining Groups, in two different scripts, have the same name "WAW"? The Joining Group should serve to identify the basic shapes of the character (without the dots, diacritics, etc.), but Arabic and Syriac letter waw have of course different shapes. What about renaming one or both of them? This could be done simply by adding the adjective "ARABIC" or "SYRIAC" to one or both. _ Marco
