L2/04-056 From: Niek Veldhuis Date: 2004-01-31 21:01:38 -0800 To: rick@unicode.org Subject: Cuneiform Unicode Dear Rick McGown, My name is Niek Veldhuis, I am professor of Assyriology at UC Berkeley and Director of the Digital Corpus of Cuneiform Lexical Texts project (cdli.ucla.edu/dcclt/dcclt.html). I am very excited about the upcoming meeting of the Unicode team where a proposal by Prof. Steve Tinney will be discussed. Working in lexical lists (basically the tools the ancients used for teaching their own writing system) I am very much aware of the complexities involved both in their synchronic and diachronic aspects. I am very happy with the proposal that Prof. Tinney has submitted and I believe that there is no other person who could represent the interests of my field in a Unicode forum than Steve. I wholeheartedly endorse his proposal and hope that the committee will do the same. Yours sincerely, Niek Niek Veldhuis UC Berkeley Department of Near Eastern Studies 280 Barrows Hall Berkeley, CA 94720-1940 510-642-6175
