INCITS L2 Intl. Rep.: M. Suignard - ACTION REQUIRED
From: Deborah J. Spittle, Associate Manager, INCITS Secretariat, Standards Processing
Subject: Advance Transmittal to INCITS L2 for the "2004 Systematic Review of International Standards "

The INCITS Secretariat has received the 2004 List of International Standards published five or ten years ago, or more, for systematic review. The U.S. TAG is required to recommend a vote for the National Body.

In accordance with clause 14.3 of the Procedures for the Technical Work of ISO/IEC JTC 1 on Information Technology, 1998, International Standards coming up to five years of age since publication have to be reviewed by the committee responsible for their preparation. The review aims at deciding whether these International Standards should be confirmed, revised or withdrawn. The decision regarding confirmation, revision or withdrawal should be based on the degree to which the International Standards have been implemented at the national level and applied in practice.

Recommendation for INCITS

The committee is to coordinate and develop the U.S. recommended position to INCITS for approval, by a thirty-day letter ballot or roll call vote. The U.S. vote will be forwarded to ANSI for submission to ISO/IEC JTC 1. For some standards, the Subcommittee (SC) recommendation is provided. If the committee concurs with the SC recommendation, it should state this and provide the technical committee vote.

[Note however: The answers to all five questions are required.]

The questions are:

Question 1

Are you in favour of

Question 2
If the voting results show a need to revise the standard, are you prepared to participate in the development of the project?

Question 3
Has this ISO/IEC standard been implemented as a national standard or is it used per se by your national industry?

Question 4
If the response to question 3 is affirmative, is the standard implemented or used without change?

In case of modifications, please identify the changes on a separate sheet, if necessary.

Question 5 (optional)
Please indicate the number of the corresponding national standard:

The position must be submitted in a format consistent with the guidelines specified in JTC 1 N 5348 for submission to the JTC 1 Secretariat.

Please contact for a copy of the standard if you need one.

The committee should return the U.S. recommendation to the INCITS Secretariat for approval by a 30-day letter ballot no later than June 15, 2004 so that, if necessary, the request may be posted to the INCITS SDB Agenda four weeks prior to the July 19-23, 2004 meeting. The JTC 1 closing date is August 12, 2004.

INCITS EB members are requested to begin reviewing the documents in preparation for expeditiously determining their vote when the U.S. TAG recommendation is submitted for approval by INCITS Letter Ballot posted to the Online Balloting System . Members noting objections are urged to send their comments via email to the Chair immediately - see email address above.

INCITS EB members should anticipate providing the U.S. vote if it becomes necessary to post this request to the INCITS SDB Agenda at the July 19-23, 2004 meeting. The JTC 1 closing date is August 12, 2004.
