L2/10-195 Subject: CJK Charts Author: Michel Suignard Date: April 30, 2010 Rick, the only thing (on top of WG2 matters already covered by WG2 documents) I have is a discussion about Unicode 6.0 CJK multi-column charts. I am seeking input for both the main block (URO) and CJK compat new. For the URO, the issue is what to do with the KP column. If it goes away and we follow ROK suggestion, the layout will be significantly different from 5.2, making review more challenging for users of 5.2 (although the quality of the 5.2 multicolumn charts is not that great). Related to that, the concern is about stability of the layout for things like order of appearance of IRG sources. There are costs in shuffling around, both in terms of review, and in redoing Unibook. It also makes more difficult to maintain legacy layout (such as the current 5.2 layout) if we redo the layout. Frankly, I didn't think much about this (10646 has been in draft mode for all that time), but Asmus reminded me that we delivered 5.2 with these multi-column charts, so we have now a legacy. Part of the concern is that, if we remove KP from the URO layout, it makes sense to move the H source along with the C (for China) span as suggested by ROK. However, that rises some sensitivity issue, because it changes the IRG source sequencing in all blocks, and it keeps Macao separated from the other C sources in the source sequence (although it would display under the C columns in the URO layout). The added complication is that KP has some characters (ext C) for which we have glyphs. We could also use some sort of 'glyph not available' for KP and keep the KP cell for all blocks (when a source exists). I just wish I could put my hands on KP fonts. I could obviously use G source fonts (commercial PRC fonts have 100% coverage of BMP and ext B blocks), but is that desirable? Concerning planning, this UTC is our last chance to make our mind, because the IRG meeting in June will finalize it. For CJK Compat, I would like to get a clearer idea of what UTC participants want in the layout. We are now in design phase with Asmus, so having a well established wish list would be nice. This would be best done on a white board. I have no desire to write a complex visual document to describe various options. Michel PS maybe that email is good enough for an agenda item, added Lisa and Eric for meeting management.
