L2/10-329 From: Shriramana Sharma Subject: Follow-up to L2/09-374 Date: August 21, 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- In L2/09-374, I had requested the encoding of a character 11355 GRANTHA LENGTH MARK which is a character that is sometimes seen, in parallel to the Kannada and Telugu length marks at 0C55 and 0CD5, as part of the written form of long vowels (both dependent and independent) in Grantha. Even in that document, I had expressed many concerns about whether this character should actually be encoded. There are many problems associated with encoding such a character as described there. Recently, several important issues related to Grantha such as the various virama forms, their semantic equality, etc have been being threshed out between various parties including me. There is already much (albeit unnecessary) confusion regarding those important issues. In this situation, there is no need for further confusion created by the encoding of a character whose potential use is far outweighed by the potential problems that would be created by such encoding as previously described. Therefore I hereby not only withdraw my previous request to encode this character, but actually now request the UTC to NOT encode such a character for Grantha. If encoded, this character would only be like an appendix - an object of questionable use and more potential trouble that it is worth, much like the Telugu length mark at 0C55 it was already said to parallel. Therefore I repeat my request to *reject* my previous request of L2/09-374 and hence NOT encode this character. -- Shriramana Sharma
