L2/11-185 Date/Time: Wed May 11 17:00:48 CDT 2011 Name: John Cowan (cowan@ccil.org) Subject: Regarding Second Revised Proposal to encode characters for the English Phonotypic Alphabet (EPA) in the UCS Ref: L2/11-153 The 1847 version of the EPA uses italic k and q to represent specific non-English sounds (ch in German _ich_ and g in 19th-century German _tag_ respectively), but L2/11-153 proposes no encodings for them. I believe it would be inappropriate to use markup, since roman k and q represent different sounds in EPA. The mathematical italic letters are also in my view inappropriate, since they are meant specifically for mathematical symbology, not for use in running text. Therefore, LATIN SMALL LETTER ITALIC K and LATIN SMALL LETTER ITALIC Q should be added to the proposal and placed in Latin Extended-D if there is room.
