L2/19-184 Response to L2/19-117 on Tamil annotations Shriramana Sharma, jamadagni-at-gmail-dot-com, India 2019-Apr-29 In L2/19-117 Ganesan requests that the informative aliases of 11FEC should be “poka” and of 11FED “aaka”. He says L2/14-212 gives the linguistic reason. In L2/15-115 p 2 he said the current spellings “poga” and “aaga” should be used. In L2/15-003 he said that the spellings recommended by L2/14-212 should be used. The informative aliases and annotations of these characters are intended to be readable by common users and not to be pedantically accurate. This is recorded in page 3 point 5 of the document L2/15-060R of the Tamil Virtual Academy (TVA), representative of the Govt of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) to Unicode. The later TVA/GoTN document proposal L2/17-069 based on which the characters are now published only affected the encoding/non-encoding of some of the characters, one formal character name (cuvatu > cevitu) and some of the glyphs. The aliases and annotations were not modified in this proposal except to match the new set of characters. If intervocalic -k- should be treated in this way, how about intervocalic -c- which is realised as [s] and reflected that way in the aliases of 11FC5 etc, and intervocalic -t- in the annotation of 11FDA? There should be consistency. The existing spellings have been arrived at after many rounds of debates from many parties including TVA/GoTN committees. The existing spellings are fine and eminently readable. There is no sufficient reason to modify them. Especially when Ganesan himself has supported them earlier. -o-
