What is Unicode and why should I care?

Time zone localization. Alphabetical sorting. Metric vs. imperial. Scientific notation. Bidirectional text. Non-Gregorian calendars. Currency conversions. Searching for the flamingo emoji 🦩 in your language.

What began in 1988 as a standard for character encoding has grown into a powerful portfolio of open source tools, libraries, and products that ensure global language support, interoperability, and resiliency across billions of devices.

Behind what most take for granted on screens today is the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit open source, open standards body for the internationalization of software and services. Unicode is embedded in every major operating system and used on more than 20 billion devices worldwide. It may be the most widely deployed technology ever.

Unicode is now a crucial global public utility. Unicode’s technologies are woven into over 20 billion devices, tools, and platforms, enabling communication, commerce, knowledge exchange, and digital participation across languages and writing systems.

UTW 2026 recognizes this foundational role and explores the technical systems, standards, and architectures that rely on Unicode.

Why should I come to UTW? Who should come to UTW?

Whether you build global products, research writing systems, create typefaces, or teach multilingual computing, UTW 2026 is your space to learn, contribute, and connect. Attendees will get the opportunity to build skills and learn from industry experts in internationalization, localization, emoji, font rendering, segmentation, and digitally disadvantaged languages.

UTW 2026 provides an exciting opportunity to connect with companies and individuals who couldn’t previously make the trip out to California, including Europe-based companies, Africa-based companies, APAC-based companies, and more.

How will this year’s UTW be different from years past?

UTW 2026 - Unicode in the World will bring the Unicode Technical Workshop to Europe for the first time in nearly two decades. This year’s conference specifically aims to broaden input and engagement beyond North America, offering new perspectives on internationalization from Europe, Africa, and APAC.

Cross-cutting talks and workshops will be curated to create new relationships between people and industries who interact with Unicode in practice, but who rarely have the opportunity to interact with each other and the internationalization community who builds the Standard.

How can I, my team, or my organization benefit from participating in UTW?

When developers make user-facing UIs or content, they invariably depend on the internationalization and Unicode stack. The larger your product’s global footprint or userbase, the more interesting and diverse your users’ localized needs become.

As a result, your success will be boosted by growing your internal capabilities in these areas. Unicode’s open source l10n data and i18n software is freely available, but adapting them to fit your specific needs is where you really unlock value. Typography and font designers can speak to the needs of language communities, publishers, designers, and technology users alike. The tutorials will teach you the “what” for many topics; conversing with fellow attendees, some of whom are experts and active contributors, will give you first hand answers to the “how”, “why”, and “when”.

With AI at the forefront of the fast moving world of technology, many people are seeking answers to similar questions: How can AI assist in i18n, l10n, testing? Can AI make processes more efficient? How do others handle custom localization workflows? What do people test for in globalized products, and how? Where are the technical answers to support our client’s or product’s unique requirements?

The answers to these questions translate into cost savings, improved quality, higher user satisfaction and trust, and reduced technical debt. Whether you need the answers yesterday, today, or tomorrow, attending UTW is one of the best ways to get started on future-proofing your global tech stack.
