Linux Internationalization and Linux Unicode Support

This paper introduces the latest Linux internationalization activities in the Linux Internationalization Initiative, Free Standards Group. The Linux Internationalization Initiative was formed in 1999 as a non profit organization to focus on the Internationalization of a core set of APIs and components of Linux distributions in order to achieve a common Linux environment where an internationalized Linux application can be executed and behave correctly regardless of distributions. The activities in Linux Internationalization Initiative include System Architecture, Printing, Developement Environment, GUI, Texttools, Web technology, Input Method, Typography, global document, Certification, etc. This paper covers how Unicode is enabled in Linux and how Internationalization of Linux in built on top of Unicode.
