Abstract

Thai and Hindi Support in Sun's Java 2 Runtime Environment

Naoto Sato - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Intended Audience: Software Engineers, Systems Analysts, Marketers
Session Level: Intermediate, Advanced

This talk will look at the Thai and Hindi support which have newly been added to the latest release of Sun's Java(tm) 2 Runtime Environment. These locales provide considerable challenge because of the complex text layout support required, the difficulties in providing word breaking for the Thai language, the re-ordering of characters required for proper collation, the non-Gregorian/Julian calendar systems, and of course the independence from the host platform required by Java. We will also focus on writing Java input methods for these locales with an emphasis on implementing Thai input sequence checking.
