Biography

Peter Constable - SIL International

Peter Constable is a linguist and researcher in information technology internationalisation for SIL International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to linguistic research and language-related development throughout the world, particularly among minority language groups. He is primarily responsible for software implementation of minority-language writing systems based on non-Latin scripts.

Peter's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree in linguistics. Before 1996, he worked with SIL as a field linguist in Mexico and, from 1991 to 1995, in Thailand. While in Thailand, his work involved learning both Thai and Northern Thai (Lanna) language and scripts. Since 1996, he has worked with a team focusing on providing solutions for non-Roman scripts. This has involved research into the variety of scripts in use around the world, as well as research and development work involving font, keyboard and other software technologies, including Unicode. Peter serves as SIL's primary representative to Unicode, and is actively involved in promoting the use and further development of Unicode.
