Also true in American proof-reading, although Americans think of it
as standing for English "delete".

Typically, the left-hand portion becomes a simple line through the text
to be deleted; the right-hand portion serves to distinguish this sign
from sloppily written underlining (which indicates that the text should
be set in italics).
