Offtopic: ISO 3166

Does anyone know why the ISO 3166 code for South Africa is ZA/ZAF, when
the name is "Suid-Afrika" in Afrikaans and "South Africa" in English,
two of the official languages? ZA(F) suggests "Zuid-Afrika", the
Dutch spelling.
