Subject: sqare root in java applets

Please give me a solution to the following problem:

I am programming java applets with the target of animating mathematic
proofs. A textarea in java is used to collect the formulas. For example
do I need the sign for a sqare root.

My attempt to use \u221A is successfull in the appletviewer of sun's
java, in the netscape navigator but not in the internet explorer of
microsoft. What may be the reason for imaging the wrong sign?.

I would be very gratefull, if you could help me.
