It's not that uncommon for characters to have more than one pronunciation.
One situation is a character having one pronunciation when used as a
surname and another when used otherwise in the language. For this
particular character, I don't happen to know the origin of the two
different pronunciations (and don't have my Chinese
dictionary here at work).
