Iâ€™m no specialist and I have no idea about whatâ€™s the original name of
that diacritic, but â€śvirgulaâ€ť is the name of the comma in medieval
manuscripts. To this day itâ€™s the word for â€ścommaâ€ť in Portuguese.
We also call the semicolon a â€śponto e vĂrgulaâ€ť â€“ period and comma,
