This was the third update to the Unicode Standard. This update version is characterized by the first release of the online data file for the Unicode Character Database, corresponding to the names list printed in Unicode Technical Report #4. The data file is referred to by some products developed at the time. This version of the Unicode Standard was not formally approved as a separate version by the UTC at the time.
