The CLDR 1.5 SurveyTool-Beta period is now starting. This will be a 2-week period to test out the data submission process before actual data gathering starts on March 5th. We'd appreciate your trying out the tool to see if there are any areas that would prevent you from using the tool effectively once we start the data submission phase. All of the changes you enter will be discarded at the end of the beta period, so feel free to experiment. (The schedule for CLDR 1.5 is at http://www.unicode.org/cldr/wiki?DevelopmentSchedule.)

You should receive your password from your administrative contact in your organization. You log into the Survey Tool at http://www.unicode.org/cldr/apps/survey   by using your email address (the one this email is sent to!) and the password contained in the separate email. Once logged in, you should see a pencil icon next to each locale which you have permission to modify.

There is a basic guide to using the tool at http://unicode.org/cldr/data/docs/survey/windows.html .  Please try walking through the  sections, looking at the data, making changes,  and saving the results. When you have any feedback on the survey tool itself, please click the Feedback link at the bottom of any page in the survey tool to file a bug.

If you've used the survey tool before, here are some of the new features:

  • All of the windows have been revamped to have a more compact presentation.
  • A "zoomed" view shows the details (note: this view is a bit rough, and being revised during the beta period)
  • The English versions of strings are shown for comparison
  • In more complicated cases, like number or date formats, examples are shown, and demos are available to try different alternatives.
  • A forum has been added to allow you to communicate with other translators for your language.

If you have any feedback on the survey tool itself, please click the Feedback link at the bottom of any page in the survey tool. There is a list of known bugs at http://www.unicode.org/cldr/wiki?SurveyToolDev/KnownBugs .

There will be a few rough edges; so please have patience, but your early participation in the beta test will help us to make sure that the tool works well for you in entering data afterwards.
