L2/00-247 From: Deborah W. Anderson [dwanders@socrates.berkeley.edu] Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 1:22 PM Subject: Old Italic feedback: Addendum (on Umbrian and Etruscan glyphs) The following comments are an addendum to the comments sent Aug. 1, 2000. The scholar who provided xerox charts of the alphabets for Umbrian and Etruscan had neglected to notate the author and title. I cannot check the source until later in August when the scholar returns. Also, he might be able to add further insight into some of the discrepancies noted below 1. Umbrian The charts I am using have no THE. ZE is included but is not identified (i.e., it is listed but no alphabetic name is assigned). TE includes some other slightly different glyph shapes. VE has also a shape similar to that of North Picene. HE also has a shape like that of Oscan. KA also includes a shape like that of Faliscan KE. PE includes a glyph close to our

. The charts list no SHE. 2. Etruscan Additions to Et1 KE has a gamma shape (the same glyph as Marsiliana KE) as the C shape HE has everywhere the shape listed for Oscan (rectangle with a single bar through it) THE also has the shape shown in Et2 and Umbrian (circle with dot in the middle) as well as a glyph in the shape of a square box with an X in the middle (as found also in "Adriatic") SHE has a capital sigma shape at Bologna ER includes also a glyph in the shape of D (as Umbrian) ES (as noted in previous comments) should include 4-bar and multi-stroke sigma TE includes a few other glyph shapes U (as noted in previous comments) should include a glyph in the shape V; there is also an example of a V upside-down EKS appears in the charts I have only in the shape of a plus (+), no X shape appears. PHE also appears with the vertical bar extending up out of the top of the circle Additions to Et2 VE has the Oscan shaped glyph also THE (as noted in previous comments) should include a round circle (O) EM charts show no example of a capital lamda (=upside-down V) SHE charts show M shape only, no example of the butterfly pattern PHE the charts show no example of the first glyph (circle with single bar through it, not extending outside the circle), only the second, but all show the line extending up out of the top of the circle (as mentioned for Et1, above) FH should be deleted for /f/ (as noted in previous comments) U should delete Y (as noted in previous comments) ES: the charts I have show a distinct "3" character, separated from the ES character, as if to suggest that in the later period ES had separated into two distinct characters. This I shall inquire about.
