L2/02-286 Date/Time: Tue Aug 6 00:28:37 EDT 2002 Contact: WOverington@ngo.globalnet.co.uk Report Type: General question I wonder if at the forthcoming meeting of the Unicode Technical Committee the possibility of changing the present policy of not encoding any more ligatures in the U+FB.. code block could please be discussed with a view to possibly changing the policy. I feel that adding code points for some more ligature characters would be of benefit to people who do not have the most recent equipment. I have produced some Private Use Area codings for some ligatures and although those codings are certainly usable I feel that it would be better if as many as possible of them were encoded as regular Unicode characters in the U+FB.. block. Certainly, the Unicode standard could point out that any code points added in the U+FB.. block are intended as a secondary access route to the glyphs for the ligatures yet I feel that such encodings of ligatures would be useful for many end users for use in desktop publishing packages and so on. My Private Use Area encodings are introduced and indexed from the following page. http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/golden.htm William Overington 6 August 2002
