Stephen Morey
Stephen Morey is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, La Trobe University. His research work has been on language documentation in smaller communities with a particular focus on traditional songs and ritual language both in South East Australia and in North East India. In North East India, his work has been to document speakers of Tai, Singpho and Tangsa languages, as well as working with speakers of Wancho language and with the North East Indian Linguistics Society and the Training and Resources for Indigenous Community Linguists (TRICL) (https://ccld-eh.org/tricl/)
His work on Australian languages involves research into manuscript sources in libraries and museums, as well as other mostly 19th century archives. Returning access to these materials for Indigenous communities is a major area of his work in retirement.
Since building the first widely accessible fonts for the Tai languages of North East India in 1997, Stephen has worked on Unicode proposals relating to the Tai languages (subsumed in the Myanmar Unicode block) as well Tai Ahom and two newly developed Indigenous scripts, Wancho and Tangsa.
