Scripts & Encoding
Assessing a Script's Unicode Readiness
Anushah Hossain, Helena Kansa, Kyra Dawkins
There are over 150 scripts that have yet to be encoded in the Unicode Standard, but not every script is on the same footing. This talk presents the results of a holistic evaluation process that aimed to classify scripts based on their “Unicode readiness” – their likelihood of getting included in the Unicode Standard based on factors such as stability, adoption, documentation, and more. We present a public searchable database and interactive map that offers details on all known unencoded scripts, describe the development of a handy Unicode readiness rubric, and walk through helpful resources for understanding the process of script encoding on the Script Encoding Initiative’s new website.
