Experiences and Challenges in Migrating Academic Documents and Dictionaries to Unicode

Stephen Morey, Craig Cornelius

on  Wed, 13:50in  for  40min

Numerous academic documents and dictionaries have been created by linguists over decades, including scripts that had not been added to the Unicode standard at the time. In most cases, custom fonts have been used for this purpose, often based on the code points of Latin or Arabic characters. For such documents, including the font with the document suffices for readers and users of this information. However, moving such information into Unicode includes opportunities and significant challenges. The audience will learn about the need for such conversion as well as techniques and technologies that can be applied.
