Abstract

Thai and Hindi Support in the Java Platform

Stuart Gill - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Intended Audience: Software Engineer, Systems Analyst, Marketer
Session Level: Intermediate, Advanced

This talk will look at the new Thai and Hindi support being added to a future release of the Java(tm) platform. These locales provide considerable challenge because of the complex text layout support required, the difficulties in providing word breaking for the Thai language, the re-ordering of characters required for proper collation, the non-Gregorian/Julian calendar systems, and of course the independence from the host platform required by Java. We will look at each of those issues and the solutions used as well as plans for future extensions.
