Abstract

Building OpenType CJKV Fonts Using the OpenType FDK

Ken Lunde - Adobe Systems Inc.

Intended Audience: Managers, Software Engineers, Font Designers
Session Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Adobe Systems can provide to font and font tools developers an OpenType FDK (Font Development Kit) that enables the building of commercial-quality OpenType fonts. OpenType fonts are becoming more widely used, and are the first fonts that are truly cross-platform, in the truest sense. This presentation will focus on how to make the most out of the OpenType FDK tools -- MakeOTF, OTFProof, OTFCompare, and OTFTableEditor -- in the context of building OpenType CJKV fonts. The same tools are used by Adobe Systems to develope their own OpenType fonts, both Western and Asian. The focus of this presentation will be on the development of OpenType CJKV fonts, because that is the presenter's area of expertise. By the end of the presentation, attendees will understand the functioning and purpose of each of the four primary OpenType FDK tools, along with a sense at how these tools aid in the font development process.
