Abstract

The JIS X 0213 Standard Support in a Unicode Locale with an Improved Shift-JIS-based Japanese Input Method

Masato Suzuki - IBM Japan, Ltd.

Intended Audience: Managers, Software Engineers, Marketers
Session Level: Beginner, Intermediate

The new Japanese character set standard JISX0213 was enacted in 2000 as an extension of generally used JISX0208. The purpose of this presentation is to describe an implementation of the Japanese input method which handles this new character set in addition to the existing character set in Unicode environment.

The paper provides detailed information as follows:
- The contents of JISX0213.
- Difference between new and existing coded character set.
- The way that the input method processed Japanese text.
- Expanded implementation to handle the new code set.

The new input method now allows users to chose input mode for existing JISX0208 or new JISX0213. Despite the conflict of code set, Unicode environment made this implementation possible.

The IBM's UNIX OS AIX5L V5.2 supports this new Japanese input method in the Unicode locale JA_JP.UTF-8 with some restrictions. The future expansion work to get rid of them is also pointed out.
