OpenType: an overview

OpenType is a standard font format that enables the building of fonts with advanced typographic features. More and more, OpenType is being used to raise the level of sophistication of fonts. In many cases, the "advanced" features of OpenType are necessary for the correct rendering of relatively complex scripts such as Devanagari and Arabic. Since the OpenType specifications is a lengthy technical document, few people can get a good picture of the capabilities OpenType through a casual reading of it. In this presentation, we examine all the basic features of OpenType in their simplest form, allowing people to paint their own picture of what the format can accomplish.
