Just a short supplement to Marco's answer:
The same scheme was used in German (not only in dictionaries, as Marco has
observed). Also, proper names (of people, of towns) were often written in
Antiqua. Even in handwriting, this distinction was usually made (between
German and Roman "Kurrentschrift" (=running hand), that is - nobody can
write Fraktur, you can only delineate it :-)
