Hopefully the issue that Andrew mentions can be resolved in some way.
This is not a problem.  Instead of writing <ê, VS14>, one just writes
<e, VS14, U+0302 COMBINING CIRCUMFLEX ACCENT>.

And .... introducing yet another convention, which is that combining marks inherit the font of the base character.

Remember, italics, even though presented as a boolean attribute in most UIs is in fact typographically a font selection.
