WEATHER: The weather is always great at that time of year, so we probably won't be able to concentrate :
Airport is Seattle SeaTac Airport. To get to Microsoft from airport:
You will need a car unless you're rich enough for a taxi ($50 incl tip from airport to Microsoft) or awfully resourceful! (There are also limousines that cost about $22 to downtown Bellevue, but you typically have to wait a bit).Follow signs to Interstate 405 - Go NORTH for about 14 miles through Bellevue (and past the Bellevue Red Lion on your left in downtown Bellevue).
Keep to the right after passing NE 8th Street in Bellevue.
Take EAST HWY 520-Redmond exit.
Take NE 51st ST East (right)
At the light, turn right (South) onto 156th Ave NE
Take a right onto NE 31st ST.
Note: if you have an extra five/ten minutes, you might prefer a more scenic route on I-5 through downtown Seattle up to route 520 instead of going up I-405 up to route 520.
Hotel information for the UTC/L2 meeting in Redmond, Washington July 29-31, 1998
My favorite hotel anywhere near Microsoft is:
Woodmark Hotel
1200 Carillon Point, Kirkland 98033 (Limited space available.)(800) 822-3700 or (425) 822-3700
It's on Lake Washington $160 plaza view (no lake view). Unfortunately there are only two standard rooms left for June 6, 7. So, snatch them immediately if they're not too pricey. To get to the Woodmark from Seattle, go North on I-5 keeping in the right lane to get onto route 520 going East. Go across Lake Washington, keeping an eye out for Mt. Rainier to the South East (if it's clear!). After leaving the 520 bridge over Lake Washington, take the second exit to go North (i.e., go under the bridge that crosses over 520) onto Lake Washington Boulevard (going South, this road is called Bellevue Way, which takes you down to the Hyatt Regency). Go North past a couple of lights, keeping in the left lane, since Lake Washington Blvd is a two-lane road (some boulevard!) Take a left at the next light (about a mile North) into Carrillon Pt on Lake Washington. The hotel has a parking garage.
La Quinta Inn (easy access to 520)
10530 Northup Way, Kirkland, WA 98004(425) 828-6585 or (800) 531-5900
Easiest to come up I-5 to 520, cross Lake Washington as for Woodmark above, but after getting off 520 onto Lake Washington Blvd, take a right on Northup Way.
Doubletree Hotel Bellevue
300 112th Av SE, Bellevue, WA 98004(425) 455-8777 or (800) 222-8733
Popular and sort of convenient (there's nothing really convenient, since the Microsoft campus is mostly in a residential neighborhood). Get off I-405 at SE 8th Street going West. Turn North onto 112 Ave for a few blocks. There are some other hotels in this area, e.g., Holiday Inn and Bellevue Hilton.
Marriott Residence Inn 14615 NE 29th Place, Bellevue, WA 98007
(425) 869-5300 or (800) 321-2211The closest, i.e., within two miles. I stayed there in the summer of '88, when David Weise and I got Windows into protected mode and blew away the 640K RAM barrier, so I remember it fondly! It's on 148th Avenue directly West of the main Microsoft campus (which is on 156th Avenue). Don't forget the complimentary breakfast, although we'll have breakfast goodies at the meetings. To get there from the Airport, follow the directions for getting to Microsoft above, but exit route 520 at the 148th Ave Exit going North (need to go under 148th Avenue. Take a right onto 148th Ave and then a left at the next light (after the bridge over 520) into NE 29th place.
Courtyard by Marriott
14615 NE 29th Place, Bellevue, WA 98007 (425) 869-5300 or (800) 321-2211Next door to Marriott Residence Inn (see directions above)
Hyatt Regency Bellevue 900 Bellevue Way NE (at 8th Street), Bellevue, WA
(425) 462-1234 or (425) 233-1234
Downtown Bellevue near the big shopping mall. Follow directions from the Airport via I-405 and exit I-405 at NE 8th Street exit (not SE 8th Street!) in Bellevue going West. Go West to Bellevue Way (a few blocks).
Downtown Seattle
There are also some really nice hotels in downtown Seattle (and oodles of neat restaurants), but they aren't very convenient for morning meetings. You can take a bus from various downtown Seattle locations out to the Overlake Park & Ride (152nd Ave NE and NE 26th St), which is pretty close to the main Microsoft campus (unless it's raining!)
Directions to the Microsoft campus from above listed hotels
To get to Microsoft from the hotels mentioned above:
Microsoft Bldg 43, Room 1540
15580 NE 31st St.
Redmond, WA 98052
(425) 936-0043
Driving instructions Phone number; (425) 936-0001
Directions from Seatac Airport: -Take I-405 North to SR 520 EastTo gain access to Building 43 from the garage, find the Visitor Elevator and take it to the first floor. The receptionist will be happy to assist you further.
Special information from Murray Sargent:
http://seattle.sidewalk.com has lots of info about Seattle including weather, restaurants, traffic views, etc.A group of "mathematical" people stayed at the La Quinta hotel and seemed to like it, it also allowed efficient carpooling.
We are considering a "hike".
Please make your reservations soon and let us know, who is coming.
