Abstract

Using Multilingual Text Search with Oracle9i Text

Kei Saito - Oracle Corporation

Intended Audience: Software Engineers
Session Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Oracle recently introduced Oracle9i database with a lot of new/enhanced internationalization features.

This presentation focuses on the Oracle9i Text technology, a text search technology which has been widely enhanced from previous version, to show how to run multilingual text search on Unicode character set based Oracle9i database.

Oracle Text adds powerful text search and intelligent text management capabilities to the Oracle9i. Oracle9i Text indexes any document or textual content to deliver fast, accurate retrieval of information. Oracle9i Text also provides multilingual search capability by a rich set text search mechanisms called "lexers". Each lexer is based on each language system so that Oracle9i Text provides accurate retrieval of information in multiple languages.

This presentation shows how to setup the database schema, how to store the documents, how to create indexes for multiple languages by using unicode database, and how to run the search for documents in multiple languages.

This presentation also shows how to create web-based powerful, multilingual text search interface (which is usually called "search engine") as a practical showcase of Oracle9i Text.
