Font mapping

The scenario is this: in the case of writing systems that do not have
a one-to-one Unicode codepoint->Glyph mapping (e.g. Arabic, Indic,
Vietnamese, etc.), we currently expect every font for these writing
systems to be mapped in a particular arrangement. This allows us to
implement a single composition automata for each writing system that
requires it, instead of creating a Unicode codepoint->Glyph mapping
table for each font.

In the interest of avoiding incompatibilities at some later time, I
was wondering if there is a commonly used approach (de facto or de
juris) to remapping fonts to support this?
