Would it be terribly churlish of me to point out that, in any encoding
whatsoever, over a TTY, you cannot tell the difference between
 
   hell <wait-forever>
 and
   hell <freezes-over-pause> o
 
 unless you use a timeout-based system, which should be avoided for Very
 Good Reasons?

This is a non-issue; can we get back to real problems?
