The tonos is a straight vertical, typewriter-style, apostophe-like
accent—which is (&—forever—should be) distinct from other similar acctents
(like the acute [right-slanted] & grave [left-slanted]).
The circumflex used in Greek was anciently a tilde, but one which is either a
true circumflex or more like a round cap would be used nowadays.
