To avoid a possible misunderstanding:
Unicode is not strictly 16 bit; its architecture has been 21 bit for years,
see <http://www.unicode.org/unicode/faq/utf_bom.html#6>. In the WWW, the
most popular Unicode format ist UTF-8, see
<http://www.unicode.org/unicode/faq/utf_bom.html#1>.

In the recent 3.1 version, characters above the 16-bit range have been
assigned, see <http://www.unicode.org/unicode/reports/tr27/>. So you
cannot ignore the fact that Unicode is more than a strict 16-bit encoding.

See also <http://www.unicode.org/unicode/faq/>.

Best wishes,
   Otto Stolz
