Emoji may be used in SMS messages. (I just sent myself such a test SMS.)
In addition, the e-mail that Japanese phones send are not limited to
other Japanese cell phones. You may both send and receive e-mail to
any valid e-mail address (such as your typical PC) all around the
globe. It's no different than your typical e-mail account.
