For those who are really interested in this debate, there is a recent
book by Shouhui Zhao and Richard B. Baldauf, Jr. entitled "Planning
Chinese Characters: Reaction, Evolution, or Revolution?" (ISBN
978-0-387-48574-4), which deals in considerable detail with the
political and bureaucratic history of Chinese character simplification
and the associated debates. (It doesn't address the psycholinguistic
    issues to any great extent.)
