UTW 2026

Session Host

Joel Sahleen

Joel Sahleen is an internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) specialist with more than two decades of practical experience building i18n/l10n systems for global companies, schools and non-profit organizations. Joel’s interest in language and technology began when he was a graduate student studying early Chinese philosophy at Stanford University, and needed to write research papers and create teaching materials written in classical Chinese. Learning how to work with different fonts, formats and encodings lead to a position as a tech specialist for the Division of Language, Cultures and Literatures, and opened up a new career working in the software industry. Over the years, Joel has worked as a software engineer, architect, engineering manager and product manager, and this has given him a very broad understanding what it takes to develop multilingual applications in the real world. He is co-chair of the W3C Internationalization Working Group, a member of the Unicode Community Engagement team, and one of his favorite things to do is to introduce new people to the world of software i18n and l10n.
