While we are off base ...
My recollection may be faulty but it tells me that the BBC adopted the
pronunciation Beijing but then dropped it and reverted to Peking after the
events of Tianamen square. Not sure what it uses now on the radio, but the
web site has both, though with Beijing having the majority use by a long
shot.
