This paper explores BreakIterator, the Java class for finding morphological boundaries (e.g., word or sentence boundaries) in a body of text. This capability is necessary for interactive text editing and display, word counting, "find whole word" searching, and database indexing. Finding boundaries in text in a language-sensitive way is actually quite complicated and subtle.

This paper explores the various issues involved in locating boundaries in text and examines the internals of both the JDK BreakIterator class and a more full-featured updated developed at IBM.
