Michael, of your four sample words, "café" certainly is part of the American
child's vocabulary from an eary age. We have cafés and cafeterias all over
the country, and we usually spell them "cafe".

In names of cities and places of California which someone else was
mentioning... The City of San José these days is frequently making use of the
accented "e", apparently as a matter of civic pride; one certainly sees it
thusly printed around here. The accent can even become a conspicuous design
element.
