UTW 2026

Session Host

Liang Hai

Liang is a Unicode-OpenType developer based in The Hague. As Typotheque’s “multilingual font technologist”, he closely works with designers to produce fonts for various scripts, from each project’s early planning to the eventual release. Outside of his day job, as a volunteer, he is one of the core maintainers of the Unicode Standard, working on the core spec (Editorial WG vice-chair), the code charts (Charts WG vice-chair), character encoding issues (Script Encoding WG), and the modernization of how the Unicode Standard itself is maintained (Release Management WG and Infrastructure Team). He has a focus on the so-called “complex scripts” such as the Indic scripts and Mongolian. Due to how these scripts are encoded, their users continue to suffer from technical complexities. For example, without a deep understanding of the OpenType Layout technology, one can’t reliably produce a Devanagari font that shapes correctly. He’s been trying to change this situation.
