Making the old new: converting hacked encodings to Unicode
Many cultures have digital documents that were created before the writing system was encoded using custom fonts, or before good support was available. This session will outline methods of converting such information into text with Unicode, enabling the use of such material for new audiences, for modern archives and databases, and online publication. Several techniques for converting such pre-Unicode data into moder form will be described along with examples and, as time permits, hands-on development of converting procedures. Examples and techniques will be coverted for document formats such as raw text, MS Word 2007 (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), and others .
