Hi,

QuickDraw GX *does* do this kind of rendering, and it hasn't been
withdrawn, though not many applications use it.

Apple's new Unicode drawing API, Unicode Imaging Services (UIS), which is
targeted at the next major reference release of Mac OS (due next year),
will also use GX technology and GX fonts, and will also be capable of
handling distinctions like this, either manually (user control) or
automatically (position within a word). Like GX, it will even handle
surrogates (Plane 1 and up).
