    FWIW, in Portuguese we fall it back (when lacking 8-bit support to use
    U+004E U+002E U+00BA or U+004E U+00BA) as "N.o" -- as well as in many
    other abbreviations.

    Skilled typesetters, and even typists do, f.i., something like
    "Ex.<sup><u>mos</u></sup>" (abbr. of "Excelentíssimos", "most excellent",
    a common form of treatment). The period mark, used as an abbreviation
    sign, goes *before* the trunkated ending.
